Chest Ultrasound

Chest ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure that produces images used to visualize internal structures of the chest, such as the lungs, diaphragm, and pleural membrane.

When Do We Need a Chest Ultrasound?

Chest ultrasound is commonly used in the following cases:

  • To evaluate the presence of excess fluid in the pleural membrane or other areas of the chest, especially when the amount of fluid is small.
  • In cases of excess fluid, ultrasound can be useful for determining the type of fluid by extracting a sample for analysis or taking a biopsy from a tumor or inserting a chest tube.

Preparations Before the Chest Ultrasound Examination

At Alfa Pulmonary Diseases Center, the examination is performed under local anesthesia and requires the patient to sign a medical consent form prior to the procedure to understand potential side effects. Patients may also need to discontinue certain medications before the procedure (e.g., blood-thinning medications).
