Pulmonary Function Tests

Pulmonary function tests are a set of assessments that measure the efficiency and capacity of the lungs, allowing the treating physician to diagnose conditions such as bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other related diseases.

Lung function tests include:

  • Spirometry: Measures the amount and speed of air moving in and out of the lungs.
  • Gas Diffusion Test: Assesses how well gases pass from the lungs into the bloodstream.
  • Methacholine Challenge Test: Measures the irritability of the airways.

When Do We Need Lung Function Measurement and Analysis?

Your doctor may request these tests if:

  • You experience lung or breathing issues.
  • You are regularly exposed to toxic or harmful substances in your environment or workplace, anticipating any occupational or environmental diseases.
  • You need to diagnose and monitor chronic lung diseases, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • You have pulmonary fibrosis; these tests are especially critical.
  • You need to evaluate the respiratory system before surgery, for instance, before bariatric or open-heart surgeries.

Types of Lung Function Tests

  1. Spirometry: Measures the volume and speed of air movement in and out of the lungs.
  2. Lung Volume Test: Measures the total amount of air the lungs can hold.
  3. Gas Diffusion Test: Evaluates how oxygen and other gases move from the lungs into the bloodstream.
  4. Bronchial Challenge Test: Uses a respiratory stimulant to demonstrate the presence of airway hypersensitivity.
