Sleep Function Testing Lab

The sleep function test is a painless, easy, and simple procedure used to diagnose sleep-related breathing disorders. The most common of these disorders is obstructive sleep apnea. It is worth mentioning that even if you don’t sleep as well as you would at home, this will not affect the test results.

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Persistent snoring during sleep
  • Repeated periods of breath cessation with waking to gasp for air
  • Frequent awakenings during the night
  • Sleep without rest, satisfaction, or depth

How is the Sleep Function Test Conducted?

The test is performed in the sleep lab at Alfa Pulmonary Diseases Center for at least 4 hours, or at the patient’s preferred location.

The test involves connecting electrodes to the person’s head, chest, and limbs. It can be done at night or during the day, and there are no specific warnings or contraindications for the test, whether during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or for the elderly.

After conducting the sleep apnea test, the doctor can gather a wealth of information such as brain waves, eye movements, respiratory rate, changes in blood oxygen levels, and cardiac function changes. The patient’s measurements are compared with normal values, and based on the results, the treating physician will develop an appropriate treatment plan if the measurements exceed normal ranges.
