Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy (FOB)

FOB is usually performed to help evaluate a lung problem. For example, your doctor might refer you to our center for bronchoscopy because you have a continuous cough or an abnormal radiological finding (chest x-ray)

Reasons for doing bronchoscopy include:

  • Diagnosis of a lung disease or
  • Identification of a lung infection
  • Biopsy of tissue from the lung or the lymph nodes
  • Removal of a mucus plug , a foreign body, or other obstruction in the airways or lungs, such as a tumor
  • Installment of a small tube to maintain the airways opened(stent)
  • Treatment of bleeding coming from the lungs or an abnormal narrowing of the airway (stricture).

During some procedures, special devices may be passed through the bronchoscope, such as a tool to obtain a biopsy, an electrocautery probe to control bleeding or to reduce the size of an airway tumor. Special techniques are used to guide the collection of biopsies to ensure the desired area of the lung is sampled.

The investigation will be done with light sedation to ensure an absolute comfort and the best results for the patients while continuous monitoring by an anesthesiology specialist. A medical consent will be signed by the subject, while explaining the possible side effects during and after the procedure.
